Ved Dhabha : Worth the wait and the weight.

A wise man once said “Street food is the ultimate salvation for the human race” which indeed is very true, why to spend on fancy restaurants when you can perfectly satiate your taste buds with the wonders on the street? One such wonder exists in a street in Kamla Nagar which goes by the name Ved Dhabha , which offers a wide variety of north Indian food cooked with pure love and dedication. Well, what makes this place so special? This Dhaba is almost 30 years old as well as it offers the best north Indian food at prices as low as possible. This place has a vast menu which includes numerous varieties of sweets. This isn’t only my opinion but every person in that area, from fellow university students to even the rickshaw drivers do not leave a stone upturned when it comes to praising this place for its legendary and authentic taste.

My visit to this place was very unplanned which was the result of the  usual ‘not so good hostel food’ day. It turned out to be a life saver weapon against hunger that day and surprisingly it is still the best weapon I can use to save myself from such days. At first this place appeared like a sweet shop which slowly transformed into a very retro vibe dhaba with wooden seating as I walked into it. To my surprise, each and every table  was occupied majorly by the university students , families etc. But due to the quick service of the very welcoming staff members of that place, we were offered our seat as soon as possible. Further , the universal truth of college students always being broke was what bothered us next, which turned into a sigh of relief as we looked at the prices on the menu. We ordered a smoking hot plate of  butter paneer and couple of butter tandoori rotis , which hardly took a while to arrive.

‘You first eat with your eyes’ turned out be the just right saying at the first glance. The butter paneer was perfectly topped with some extra butter and the tandoori  rotis  were so glazed as if they were dipped in rivers of butter . And lastly, as I took a bite of the buttery roti wrapped around the piping hot curry the ‘title’ of this article was justified. It was such a heavenly and toothsome experience to have such delicious food at such a legendary place in this walled city. I left that place with nothing but a satisfactory grin and a  great experience regarding the food, hospitality and service and of course the low bill.

So, if you are a hungry individual with a lot of north Indian cuisine fandom, make sure you visit this place without fail and have a heavenly experience from the very first bite till the end.

Sharma Kachori wale- Age old romance of Aaloo and Kachori

We all have spent our entire childhood listening to the quote ‘Old is Gold’. Having served the numerous generations of Saddi Dilli from decades, this ‘hole in the wall’ street food joint ‘Sharma Kachodi Wale’ is the perfect example for that quote which indeed is very famous for its perfect and  crispy Kachodi (an Indian snack made of maida which is deep fried) along with mouth watering and drool worthy Aaloo curry (potato curry )around the walled city. It lies on the main road towards Shakti Nagar Chowk which is very  near to Kamla Nagar. People gather around like flock of birds to satiate their taste buds with such a legendary serving without even burning a hole in their pocket.

This joint serves five matthi kachodis which are basically kachodis with the stuffing dipped in the ‘perfectly spiced and seasoned’ aaloo curry with a taste which could make every person on this planet drool over. What makes this place even more special is the price at which it offers this delicacy, which indeed is so low that even a broke college student would be able to afford. It offers one serving of the dish at price as low as 20 rupees which is why we can see the people from all the working classes having their bite here.

In this era, where street cuisines have a very tough time competing  among themselves ‘Sharma Kachodi wale’ makes this simplest dish stand out and make the hearts of gourmands melt in satisfaction as they munch in a bite of this simple yet so legendary dish. I have always heard my uncle describe this place as one of his favourite joints to grab a quick snack since his childhood. He always adds the phrase ‘consistent taste’ whenever he describes it , which shows how famous this joint is for its consistency and the legendary taste accompanied by their swift and uninterrupted service despite a large amount of people eager to fill their mouths with the gem which this place offers.

No matter how many new and famous hotspot food joints open with time , ‘Sharma Kachodi wale’ will always be the showstopper whenever our taste buds crave for a light and tantalizing snack.

Discovering a happy eatery : Bistro 57

18th July 2017:

Scorching sun, enough to pierce deep through the skin and make a person thirsty in seconds. Also, the college admissions time ; moving to a new city , getting used to new things, staying away from home. I was a new girl in the unknown city who was just done with her college admissions and shifting into a hostel. I still remember my first day here, everything felt so different. I was normally chatting with my roommate about the famous places to visit nearby i.e. Kamla Nagar, New Delhi which led to the discovery of this ‘Happy Eatery’ called Bistro 57.

The name sounded fascinating enough to me, so fascinating that I wanted to go there without even wasting a minute. We were all set, wearing our cool summer clothes, setting the destination as ‘Bistro 57’ on the Google Maps. After a short walk, we entered a small street with a lot of eateries among which ‘Bistro 57’ was one of them. It was a small pop shop with loads of variety , from milkshakes to cold coffee to quick bites like garlic bread and sandwiches. With a question mark on our faces we asked for help from a fellow customer to help us with our order. “What is the best thing that we can have from here? ” we asked, “Bistro has a PhD in all their dishes, nothing will disappoint you here.” he replied with a proud grin on his face.

A wise man once said ‘Classics are always the best’ which indeed made us choose the all time classics i.e. cold coffee and pizza. The swift service was what made us love the place even more despite the swarm of  people mostly, the college going fellows waiting for their pre placed order. The taste of the much needed ‘caffeine’ along with perfectly blended milk and sugar of  right consistency and the drool worthy sizzling pizza with a crispy crust, perfectly baked toppings and loads of cheese was what made our day. To our surprise the bill came out to be so nominal for such a great quantity of food, enough to force us to skip dinner at the hostel.

Today , a year passed and ‘Bistro 57’ still stands untouched at rank ‘one’  on my list of the perfect eateries around Kamla Nagar which has never disappointed me with any of its variety. This rustic yet popular and inexpensive eatery will always remain as the show stopper of our ‘Chatori Lane’.

Satisfy Your Waffle Cravings At Waffle Chowk In Noida

Traditionally eaten as a breakfast food in popular culture, waffles have gained popularity as a dessert in Delhi. Whether they are loaded with chocolate syrup or fruits, they are hard to resist.

Recently, Delhi has seen a rise in the demand of waffles with new cafes coming up in every neighbourhood. However, in the NCR region of Noida, there are still only a few waffle places to choose from.

Waffle Chowk was originally a food truck located in Gurugram’s Sector 29. It wasn’t long before it gained popularity and people started dropping by to try out their remarkable waffles and milkshakes. After its major success in Punjabi Bagh, Waffle Chowk decided to branch out and has opened up an outlet in Noida.

Located in Sector 28, opposite Brahmaputra Market, Waffle Chowk is a small outlet with outdoor seating. It serves delicious crunchy waffles with toppings varying from the classic maple syrup to the rather innovative white chocolate. One also has the option of adding more toppings and customising the waffle a bit according to their liking.

Waffle Chowk’s waffle sandwiches help set it apart from other waffle outlets. People drool over its Nutella and Peanut Butter Sandwich, two things which go perfectly together. If you are unwilling to experiment, the chocolate chip waffle is a safer and equally delicious choice. The waffle is cooked to perfection, having a crunchy texture. It is finished off with a topping of hot chocolate syrup, chocolate chips and a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream, depending on the customer’s choice. A few of the waffles with toppings of strawberries and mangoes are seasonal. One can pair these scrumptious waffles with cold/hot coffee or ice tea and enjoy a wonderful evening indulgence.

If you are fond of Oreos, or kit kat or prefer to keep it a little healthy with fruits, there is something to everyone’s liking. The waffles range from rupees 180 to 250 and each of these is served with a topping of vanilla ice cream. This outlet is run by two people in an organised and efficient manner with the help of token system. The outlet opens up around 11 am, but it takes time to set up and thus service starts only by 12 pm. It does not have a formal seating, but a few tables and chair have been put together as a makeshift seating area. This waffle place is situated close to the Botanical Garden metro station and is easy to spot as well. Being relatively new, not too many people know about this place and so it does not remain crowded. It is a great place to grab a quick bite and satisfy your waffle cravings.

The Waffle Baker, The Newest Kid On The Block

Waffle, considered to be Belgium’s “culinary gift to the world” is no longer a plain and simple dish as it originally was. It has found its variants across the world and is served either with strawberries, maple syrup, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, sometimes frozen, at others, freshly cooked. But, have you ever had a chocolate-laden, waffle on a stick?

In Delhi, one can find multiple outlets selling waffles, each trying to outdo the other. The Waffle Baker, a newly opened outlet in GTB Nagar area has gone a step further. Situated on Hudson Lane, in the midst of North Campus’ food hub, this waffle place offers waffles with a variety of toppings like Nutella, chocolate, Gems, and also ice-cream on the side. Their much-loved waffle and an especially innovative one is the Berry Express which is served with a topping of Magic Pops.

The Waffle Baker’s rampant popularity is due to their ingenious idea of serving waffles on a stick. These waffles are made without using any eggs and the batter is prepared by them, without the use of any machine. The end product is, absolutely delicious waffles with the perfect amount of crunch, which are then dipped in chocolate sauce or topped with a dash of colourful sprinkles and served to you with a smile. The place is quite small and lacks proper seating, therefore an, even more, reason to go for waffles on a stick. They are not that expensive and the quality that you get makes it a bargain. One also has the option of creating one’s own waffle, customising it according to liking. This outlet also serves coffee and various shakes, a lovely combination with a waffle. This place opens around 11 am and is easy to reach, the nearest metro station being GTB Nagar on the Yellow line.

This year, The Waffle Baker is trying to make waffles on a stick accessible to the wider public by presenting them at the NBT Flavour Fest- Street Fusion Food Court taking place at Baba Kharak Singh Marg on the 14th and 15th of October. The festival is curated by Delhi Food Walks and aims to bring to the forefront the talented minds behind the various fusion food items.
